Hope & Aaron's Wedding at South Causey Inn

Sometimes you just know you're in for a fun day, and Hope and Aaron certainly brought it in abundance. On Friday 21st August, this wonderful couple said “I do” at South Causey Inn, tucked away near Beamish in County Durham — and despite British weather doing its very British thing, nothing stopped the celebrations. As a North East wedding photographer, days like this are exactly why I love what I do.

Getting Ready at The Den, South Causey Inn

The morning started early, with Hope and her bridal party getting ready in The Den — one of the amazing spaces at South Causey Inn for wedding morning prep. Complete with its own indoor hot tub and plenty of room to relax, The Den set the tone for a morning full of fun and laughter as the girls got glammed up for the day ahead. Meanwhile, back home, Aaron and his groomsmen were getting suited and booted, arriving at South Causey Inn, ready for the 12:30pm ceremony.

A Father's First Look

Once Hope's mum had helped her into her dress and fixed her veil in place, it was time for one of the most special moments of the day: Dad's first look. Watching a father see his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress is always a privilege to photograph, and this was no exception — a lovely, emotional moment for the whole family. The bridesmaids had their own first look moments shortly before the ceremony too, adding even more excitement to an already special morning.

Sky Leads the Way Down the Aisle

The ceremony took place in South Causey Inn's beautiful chapel, and true to the fun-loving spirit of the day, it was Sky — Hope and Aaron's Bichon Frise — who stole the show, escorting the rings down the aisle in his very own tuxedo. Dad walked Hope down the aisle to Aaron, and the couple exchanged vows and rings in front of their nearest and dearest, sealing the day with rings, laughter and more than a few happy tears.

Confetti, Rain and a Plan B

As with any British wedding, the weather had other ideas. Rain moved in just as the wedding party stepped out for their drinks reception, so — as agreed with Hope and Aaron ahead of the big day — we switched to Plan B and headed back into the chapel for the family photographs. (The pre-wedding meetings with my couples are essential for me to help plan for such occurrences and ensure that whatever the weather, they are happy with the alternative plan). Fortunately, the rain cleared just in time, and we headed back outside to capture confetti shots with the whole wedding party, complete with confetti cannons for maximum impact.

Into the Barn for the Wedding Breakfast

Hope and Aaron's wedding breakfast took place in South Causey Inn's beautifully decorated barn, strung with atmospheric twinkling lights. The bridesmaids formed a guard of honour as the couple made their entrance, before surprising everyone with a choreographed dance entrance of their own — a brilliant way to kick off the reception. Heartfelt speeches followed from the father of the bride, the maid of honour, the mother of the bride, the groom and the best man, ahead of a wedding breakfast cooked to perfection by the team at the South Causey Inn. As the weather brightened up again, we headed back outside for more group and couple portraits before the evening celebrations began.

First Dance, a Mother-Daughter Surprise and a Full Dance Floor

The evening kicked off with the cutting of the cake and a first dance, followed by a beautifully memorable father-daughter dance. What came next was a complete surprise to the happy couple: the bridesmaids launched into a choreographed dance mash-up, joined first by Hope's mum, and then by the groomsmen too. It wasn't long before the whole dance floor was packed with guests, and the party truly got going.

Sparklers, Champagne Spay and a Send-Off

No wedding day is complete without a sparkler send-off, and this one was no exception — always a fun challenge for a wedding photographer, coordinating that many sparklers (and that many happy, well-refreshed guests!) all at once. With the light fading and the celebrations still going strong, it was time for me to pack away my cameras and leave Hope, Aaron and their guests to dance the night away.
