Abby & Jak's Wedding at Woodhill Hall Farm
Wood Hill Hall Farm, Northumberland — Saturday 8th August

I've photographed a lot of weddings over the years, and every so often one comes along where the venue, the weather, and the two people getting married all seem to be working in the same direction. Abby and Jak's day, in the beautiful Northumberland countryside at Woodhill Hall Farm, was one of those. The forecast behaved itself, the light was kind all day, and the venue gave me room after room, view after view, to work with. I couldn't have asked for more.
Getting Ready — Jak and the Lads
I always try to get to the groom's side early. It's usually the calmer half of the morning, and this one was no exception — cufflinks, a bit of banter, the last cup of coffee before the suits go on. Jack had seven groomsmen with him, including his best man Harvey, and by the time I arrived they'd already found the day's easy rhythm: a lot of laughing, not much nerves showing, though I suspect that changed a little once the Registrars arrived.

The Girls at the Pink Nomad
Abby and the bridesmaids got ready at the Pink Nomad, and it's exactly as good a backdrop as it sounds — that pink-washed courtyard with the round Moroccan doorway made getting-ready photographs feel like their own little event rather than something to rush through before the main one. Abby had four bridesmaids and a flower girl with her, and there was champagne, a lot of noise, and the particular kind of happy chaos that comes with getting a bride into her dress with twenty minutes to spare.

The First Look
This is the moment I try hardest not to miss, and it's rarely the bride's own face that makes the photograph — it's everyone else's. Abby's bridesmaids saw her first, and the noise they made said everything words wouldn't have. Then her dad, waiting his turn, doing that thing dads do where they laugh so they don't do the other thing.
Down the Aisle
The ceremony itself took place in the beautiful chapel, all chandelier and olive trees and light pouring in through the arched doorway — one of my favourite ceremony spaces I've worked in all year.

Rings and Vows
I love this bit for the small things — the exact second a ring goes on, the look that passes between two people who've just realised they're actually doing this. Quiet, over in a moment, and worth every bit of attention.

Confetti and the First Kiss
And then the noise comes back. Confetti, cheering, everyone on their feet — it's one of my favourite parts of any wedding day to photograph, because nobody's thinking about the camera at all.

Drinks, Canapés & the Wedding Party
With the vows done, everyone moved outside for drinks and canapés, which is exactly when I go looking for a bit of shade. Nobody thanks you for a group photograph where half the wedding party is squinting into the sun, so we found a shaded spot at the venue.

Around Woodhill Hall Farm
This is where the venue really earns its reputation. Between the dry stone walls, the open fields, and that staircase looking straight out over the valley, I had more good light and backdrop than I knew what to do with. This part of the day is where I slow things right down — using the architecture and the landscape rather than working against it.

The Wedding Breakfast
With the group photos done, there was still plenty of time left for Abby and Jack to mix with their guests before the wedding breakfast was called. The room itself was beautifully decorated — Abby had made all the decorations herself, and it showed in every detail. Bright and airy under the Orangery's glass, it was the perfect room for the speeches that followed, every one of them full of laughter and stories from Abby and Jack's past together.
Golden Hour
Every wedding day has one stretch of light I'd photograph forever if I could, and this was it — the sun dropping low over the fields, everything gone gold and soft.

Into the Evening
By the time the lights came on and the dancing started, the nerves of the morning were long gone. The evening celebration moved into the Tipi — dark and glowing with twinkling lights, a proper contrast to the bright, airy Orangery the wedding breakfast had been held in. There were specially made pancakes, plenty of dancing, and no schedule left to keep — just Abby and Jack and everyone they love in one room.
